Top 5 Reasons I’m “All-In” for Creative Every Day : Art Every Day Month Challenge 2011

Today, November 1st, Creative Every Day: Art Every Day Month Challenge 2011 begins.

The brainchild of Leah Piken Kolidas, the intent of the challenge is to invite others to challenge themselves to create some art every day for one month and post it publicly to share and to be held accountable.

So I’m thinking that for me, this challenge serves a couple of purposes:

  1.  To increase my consciousness around my intention to create more than doodles
  2.  To channel some energy into actually experimenting with regular art journaling
  3.  To get back to my blog with regularity
  4.  To provide an opportunity for me to engage with some really cool folks
  5.  To push/test myself to see if I can ACTUALLY COMPLETE THIS CHALLENGE
(rather than just talk about how neat it is that other people actually do it)

Some of you may recall that I took on Melody Beattie’s “Make Miracles in 40 days” challenge in the Spring, and actually wrote gratitude entries in my journal 37 out of 40 days straight — a real record for me! (Yeah, me!)

Truth be told, as much as I’m a HUGE FAN of Julia Cameron’s Morning Pages, and the practice of journal writing, I’ve had trouble in the past settling into the discipline of doing anything every day.

Don’t get me wrong, I write most days… but most can often be defined very loosely in my intellectual mind.

What I know for sure is if I want to be a “writer”, I must write. If I want to be an “artist”, I must make art. If I want to a musician, I must make music. If I want to be a “creator”, I must create.

Not occasionally, not a couple times a week, not when I feel like it. But every single day (or as close to it as is humanly possible.)

The only way to become accomplished at any skill is to practice. That’s a simple fact.

Talking about it won’t get me there.

Dreaming about it won’t get me there.

Only doing the work will.

Creators create. And create. And create. And create.

Good. Bad. Indifferent. It doesn’t really matter.

So I’m taking on this challenge.

Who’s with me? (I don’t know about you, but I can always use a little moral support!)

P.S. Here are my Day #1 creations
